Well, that was interesting...
- David Emerson crossing the floor this soon after the election has to set some sort of record. He's like Belinda Stronach, except with integrity and substance. (UPDATE: Sorry to clarify: HAD integrity).
- No Deputy Prime Minister.
- Peter Mackay in Foreign Affairs.
- Other than Stockwell Day in Public Safety and unelected Michel Fortier in Public Works, it seems like afairly moderate and predictable cabinet. Harper had to stick Day somewhere, but we still haven't figured out the logic in appoint Fortier.
- Alberta's picks are Rona Ambrose for Environment, Jim Prentice for Indian Affairs, and Monte Solberg for Citizenship and Immigration.
- As far as we can tell, they haven't announced any of the Parliamentary Secretaries, which we would assume means that they will not be members of the Privy Council (as was the case in the previous Liberal Government).
We're kind of busy right now, so we'll comment more soon... but the entire list can be found here.

You heard it here first: Stockwell Day will shine in Public Security. I really do feel safer now that I know someone is in that role who will take our nation's security seriously.
ReplyDeleteThis could be just my naivete, but my hunch is that the rationale behind Michael Fortier's appointment is that Stephen Harper thought he was the best available candidate for International Trade Minister.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you're going to have to clarify for me how David Emerson has integrity after what he just pulled.
Well, we're glad that you think Harper thought Fortier was the best choice for International Trade. Unfortunatly, he was appointed to Public Works.
ReplyDeleteIt also appears that in a twist of hyprocracy Harper will appoint Fortier to the Senate on the condition he resign his Senate seat and run in the next election... wow. Not even one day in to power and the Tories have already proved their lack of committment on the Senate issue.
As for Emerson, yes, he did have credibility before this. Wasn't there a movement by some Conservative MP's to have MP's who cross the floor run in by-elections? We wonder what they have to say about this.
It's also called an apostrophe - look into it.
ReplyDeleteyeah, we noticed the apostrophe thing, but were too lazy to change it. And now, we don't really care.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
dave
