The first round of Calgary Grit's Best PM Never ends tomorrow at 12 noon - so remember to VOTE!
Here are the daveberta Official Endorsements in the race...
Matchup 1 - D'Arcy McGee
Matchup 3 - Ed Broadbent
Matchup 4 - Sir George-Étienne Cartier
Matchup 5 - Louise Arbour
Matchup 6 - Lloyd Axworthy
Matchup 7 - Stephen Lewis
Matchup 8 - Peter Lougheed
On another note, James Laxer has a copy of an article on his blog about the political tactics of the Federal NDP in the 2004 & 2006 elections. I read the article in The Walrus a couple of months ago.
I also read Laxer's book "The Border: Canada, the U.S. and Dispatches from the 49th Parallel" last month, there are some pretty good sections in it. Maybe I'll post a review if I find the time.

Out of your endorsees, it looks like only Cartier and Lougheed are gonna pull it off with a big margin. Ed Broadbent is in tight with John Manley. McGee is waaaay behind Robert Stanfield. and the rest are trailing. too bad Arbour was the only woman to make it this far and she's getting left in Tommy Douglas' dust. Too bad, Douglas is way overrated.
ReplyDeleteAnd Laxer's peice was right on. Jack Layton's NDP's quest to win more seats at the cost of Conservative governments is a dangerous recipee for the long-term sustainability of the NDP as a political force.
ReplyDeleteJack Layton's "Lend me your vote" tag will only work if Canadians see value in voting NDP. I voted NDP in the last election and not only did I end up with a Tory MP after spliting the vote with the Liberal candidate, but I don't think Layton has done much to "earn my vote" and he'll have to do much more in before the next election if he expects it again.
ReplyDeleteI think I might even vote Green next time.
There's more than one woman in Calgary Grit's contest. Deb Grey is in the match that dave hasn't endorsed any of the candidates in and shes up against Preston Manning.
ReplyDeleteWhy did you not endorse Grey or Manning?
The Laxer peice was quite interesting. I remember thinking how weird it was that the NDP would rather attack the Liberals than Harper when Harper is waaaaay worse that Martin from an NDP standpoint.
ReplyDeleteI used to be really involved with my local NDP association, but I've found that in the past few years, the party is more interested in getting seats than standing up for true socialist principles. What happens after that? We're no different than the Liberals and Tories that we criticize.
On the other hand, I would love for the NDP for form government or official opposition, but quite frankly, it's not going to happen anytime soon. So in the meantime, I don't think the Liberals are that bad.
Tommy D may be overrated, but he has an easy opponent in Arbour. She is totally out to lunch with her war crimes allegations in the Israel vs Lebanon conflict. If she was PM, we'd be inviting them over for tea.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand why Calgary Grit, a Liberal, does not include Judy Lamarsh on his list. Another good choice would have been Thérèse Casgrain...
ReplyDeleteI *heart* James Laxer.
