Here is a list of nominated provincial party candidates nominated to run in the 2008 Alberta general election on March 3, 2008.

  1. I think there's a good chance things will remain close to the same next time.

    ND: 2-4 Seats
    Liberal: 10-16 Seats
    PC: 5-10 Seats

  2. I respectfully disagree. I attended Edmonton-Centre NDP candidate Deron Bilous's BBQ on the weekend and found him and all of the other NDP candidates to be very impressive folks.

I suspect the NDP will grow a bit in Edmonton, say 6 to 8 seats, while the Liberals will grow in Calgary and the rest of urban Alberta.

If the some group other than the PC's can grab even a seat or two on the right side of the spectrum, say in the rural southern ridings, we could even start to talk about minority government possibilities. Now how much fun would that be! :D

  3. Dave Eggen was also impressive when he ran against Laurie Blakeman in 2001. But a New Democrat isn't going to win against Laurie Blakeman in Edmonton Centre. Bilous will make a good NDP MLA in Highlands Norwood when they finally get rid of Mason.

The NDP have growth potential in Manning and Ellerslie. If Larry Booi runs again they have a chance in Glenora but that's unlikely. The ND's are vulnerable in Calder and Beverly. I think Eggen will pull it off but I'm not so sure about Ray Martin in Beverly.

  4. I think the NDP would have a better chance of winning more seats in Edmonton if they had a leader like Rachel Notley or David Eggen. Until then, I don't think they can win any more than one or two more seats than they already have. That may be enough for some Dippers, but not this one.

The previous commenter was right that there should be strong NDP campaigns in Edmonton-Manning and Edmonton-Ellerslie but I am not sure that there is enough to win. With the near zero support in the byelections it is time that the Alberta NDP reevaluate the direction we are heading and if the current leadership is leading us in the right direction.

  5. For the record, the NDP did not do so terribly bad in the by-elections... IF you look at their results in comparison to their history in those ridings.

In Calgary-Elbow, they increased their number of actual votes over the last general election, that was something that neither the losing PC's nor the victorious Liberals were able to do. They both lost votes compared to the previous election.

If nothing else, this shows that the NDP's base vote is very secure and is highly unlikely to shift to other parties. I think that alone tells us that the New Democrats will come away from the next election with at least as many seats as they have now.

The NDP has, for better or worse, always been an Edmonton based party. As Dr. Taft's Liberals begin to focus their efforts on growth in Calgary and other urban centres around Alberta, it will leave a void for the NDP to fill in the province's capital.

With top notch candidates like Marilyn Assheton-Smith in Ellerslie (former U of A professor) and Christina Gray in Mill Woods (a recent YWCA Woman of Distinction winner and chair of the Edmonton Transit Advisory Board) I think the NDP still has lots of new seats in play.

Nice spin. The NDP went up from 345 votes in Calgary Elbow to 348 in the byelection. Whoopdefrickin'doo.

While we're talking about historical trends, please explain how the NDP could routinely pull 10 to 15 per cent of the vote, and over 1,000 votes, in Elbow in the 1980s, but has progressively tanked further ever since. As with the rest of the province save a few seats in Edmonton.

  7. Mary Cameron is running for the PC nomination on october 20 in Edmonton goldbar

    ReplyDelete
  8. Is that the same Mary Cameron who was the president and ceo of the WCB?

The same Mary Cameron who was paid out $392,800 in severance after she left?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I don't know the exact amount, but yes it is the same person. What this area needs is someone who can connect with the people in the same way that Hugh MacDonald does, but add to that some proactive efforts in caucus. That's why I'm volunteering for David Dorward. If you want to volunteer, or at least meet David and see what he's all about, come to the campaign volunteer kick-off on Friday 21 September at 6:30. Visit www.VoteDorward.ca for the location and to learn more about David. He's our best hope.

  12. Yes, I'm sure that the blue collar middle class voters will identify strongly with Mary Cameron. In fact she should talk about her $392,800 in severance she received when she fled the WCB! Gold Bar will surely support her on that alone!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Goldbar does need an experienced and strong candidate. That guy is Hugh MacDonald!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, the word is that Alberta's NDP is running a former city councilor in Gold Bar... but I'm getting that from a questionable source. We'll see on the 17th.

Did you kidnap him Dave like you misappropriated Ed Stelmach's personality? Is Brian Fleck being hidden with edstelmach.ca? Expect a lawsuit from the NDP now!

  19. Carl Benito is least ethical as a Realtor - will he be as a legislator?

    ReplyDelete
  20. According to his website Carl Benito was the "Official PC MLA Candidate for Edmonton Mill Woods in the 2001 Provincial Election" as opposed to being the "Unofficial PC MLA Candidate for Edmonton Mill Woods in the 2001 Provincial Election"

    ReplyDelete
  21. Carl Benito says in his website that Millwoods "constituency has been an opposition since 1986. Isn't 21 years too long to say enough is enough.." - well, the same can be said about the provincial Tories.

He claims that Millwoods is basically dull and he will take it out of "hybernation" and make it vibrant, alive and well again?? Who is he kidding - I am from Millwoods, I chose to live here because to me, it is the most vibrant community in Edmonton.

Giving up your salary, how generous! - Guess he'll just live-off the perks, allowances and MLA expense accounts?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Carl Benito's campaign is alternately hilarious and offensive. From his press release: "This constituency has been an opposition since 1986. Isn't 21 years too long to say enough is enough and bring the good old days of having an MLA right inside the table of Government? We need to hear the voice of the constituency, meet the needs of the community and have a say in the government. And this will only happen if we elect a PC MLA and not an opposition."

What a backwards province. A LOT of PC candidates are using that "voice in government" line, but it a) presupposes that the PCs will be the government and b) shows the contempt the opposition is shown in Alberta politics. Who needs a diversity of voices, anyway?

As for the "good old days" of having a government MLA--that line is beyond sarcasm.

Anyway, once the citizens of Mill Woods become sick of their putrescent "hybernation" and elect a conservative MLA, Benito promises that his constituency office will do the following:

    "- Outstanding Young Men Award
    - Free Notary and Commissioner of Oath
    - Scholarship Awards Night
    - Annual Family Picnic in the Park
    - Constituency Office Christmas Open House
    - Monthly Constituency Pop and Hotdog Day
    - Summer Ladies Fun Run
    - Job Fair
    - Quarterly News Letter
    - Festival of Martial Arts
    - School Council Outstanding Project Cup
    - Model Citizen Medal
    - Ten Outstanding Mother of the Year Award."

I'm not sure where he expects to find the money to pay for these things in his office budget, but I digress. I know I've just been waiting for a candidate to promise an MLA-sponsored martial arts festival and a job fair.

None of these ideas are necessarily bad (some are worse than others, certainly) but I think it's revealing of what the PCs think representation is all about. Notice that he doesn't really talk about anything he's planning to do in the legislature--it's all community fun runs, wearing a big apron and getting your picture taken. Government, after all, will take care of itself.

That's why we need to be rid of those nefarious opposition members--they waste time debating issues and stuff.

It's sad, really. Benito's an extreme example, but he's not atypical of PC candidates.

  27. Guy Boutilier is an ineffective blowhard. When he worked as Minister of Alberta Environment he told staff to hire one of youth who used to work on a young people's advisory committee when he was mayor. His old executive assistant also told the department to his partner's niece.

He has a reputation of treating public servants like crap and only pursuing opportunities that work to fill his need for publicity. He loves to flaunt his Harvard Masters, yet he cannot run an organization. Just ask the leaders or staff of any department he's ever worked in.

He cannot understand complicated issues...and he's been largely ineffective in every ministry he's had the opportunity to lead.

How can we enlighten the Fort McMurray area? They are not being best represented by this character. His showing in front of the EUB is but one of many examples of his ineffectiveness.

  28. Stelmach won't look into returning officers' Tory connections
    By JEREMY LOOME, Legislature Bureau

Premier Ed Stelmach says he won’t look into opposition concerns that loyal Tories have been named to supposedly neutral returning officer positions.

It came after the Alberta Liberals noted that four returning officers appointed by the government have extremely strong Tory connections – including one officer who has openly criticized the Liberal candidate in her riding on a blog.

“So you’re saying that off the 83 there’s nobody there that has relatives in another party?” Stelmach said when told that the Liberals want officers appointed by a neutral third party.

Among those concerning the opposition are Robin Darsi, the returning officer in the anticipated tight Calgary Currie race between radio veteran Dave Taylor, who is the Liberal incumbent, and Arthur Kent, the former TV reporter. Kent ran and beat Darsi for the Tory nod.

In Calgary North Hill, Tory riding executive member Andrea Grubbe was given the role; in Calgary Montrose, it was handed to Lynn Warkentin, who is the wife of the PC riding association’s treasurer, Frank Warkentin.

And in Edmonton Meadowlark, Allie Wojtaszek has received the role, even though she is the wife of the PC riding association president.

Three of the four were not among the initial list of 63 returning officers appointed by the province in December, but were instead added to the roster by the Tories through an order in council earlier this year.

Alberta Liberal Leader Kevin Taft said he can’t understand why the Tories wouldn’t favour neutral appointments and why the appointments weren’t made back in December, with the rest.

“These are people that should be absolutely neutral and should be seen to be neutral and when they’re close chums or spouses, or plugged right into the Tory election machine, they’re not. And nobody’s going to respect the premier.”

Although she has since removed it, Wojtaszek posted a scathing blog entry about Liberal candidate Debbie Cavaliere when she received the Liberal nomination Nov. 23. In her post, she said Cavaliere only switched parties when it was clear she couldn’t win the PC nod.

Wojtaszek also took a shot at departing MLA Maurice Tougas, saying he’d “decided that he’d rather be back ‘writing his gossip column’ at the Edmonton Examiner.” In fact, Tougas is the paper’s former editor.

  29. David Ward is no longer the Wildrose Alliance candidate in EDMONTON-WHITEMUD.

It is rumoured that this is a result of his extremist views expressed under the name "Tical" on FreeDominion, while using one of the infamous Danish cartoons as his avatar.

I wonder if he'll "do a Chandler" and complain to the Human Rights Commission
