Former Education Minister David King has a great titled Democracy: The Unfinished Revolution this month's edition of Alberta Views Magazine - if you haven't already picked up a copy, you should. Here's the quote: "Government does not empower citizens, and the government that suggests it does is arrogant and ignorant. Citizens empower government, and citizens can disempower governments. From time to time we should disempower them."

Although having inspiring and exciting candidates wouldn't hurt either!!

ReplyDeleteThese results are.. incredible. A larger majority than Klein's highest? I'll admit, I didn't find Taft's campaign that great but.. jesus.
The do say that democracy gives people the government they deserve. I never quite understood what that meant until now. I expect it'll take the PC voters another couple years to figure it out.

WOOT! What a victory for people who think that a caucus meeting is the same thing as a sitting o the Legislative Assembly. As a basis of comparison, a similar majority would be 267 of 308 of the seats in the House of Commons.

Taft has no one to blame but himself and his party's shortcomings and lack of respect for the average voter. Low voter turnout is no excuse, because it was the Liberal voters who seemed to stay home in droves, especially in Edmonton. Calgary is the Redder city now. That's sad that the Libs couldn't even be bothered to shore up their core support.
If you're smart Dave, you'll start calling for Taft's head, now....
Every free and fair election is an exercise in citizen empowerment Dave.
ReplyDeleteThey also decide to whom they will grant their consent to govern at the ballot box. The Liberals NOT getting support is about the Liberals - not the electorate.
Indifference is a choice made by those who are content to let others decide the future for them...sad but that is the whole truth about those who don't show up to make a difference.
