According to the CBC, the Federal Tories raised twice as much as the Federal Liberals in 2004.
The numbers, released by Elections Canada show that the:
Conservatives raised $10.9 million.
Liberals raised $5.2 million.
New Democrats raised $5.19 million.
Bloc Québécois raised $897,000.
Look at the Liberal-ND numbers. Wow. That is quite close.
In the spirit of money, here's an appropriate zinger...
For The Love Of Money
By: The O'Jays
Money, money, money, money...MONEY!!! (repeat 2 times)
Some people got to have it
Some People really need it
You wanna,
Do things, do things, do things, bad things with it!
Well, you wanna,
Do things, do things, do things, good thing with it!
(For the love of money)
People will build from their minds
(For the love of money)
People will right their own wrongs
(For the love of money)
People can't even walk the streets
Because they never know in the world they're gonna meet!
Oh that mean...oh mean, mean green!!!
On my Desire!! My money!
(For the love of money)
People will laugh God's name and cheat!
(For the love of money)
People don't care if they turn on me
(For the love of money)
A woman will show her precious findings
For a small piece of paper, it carries a lot of weight!
Oh that mean...mean, mean, mean, mean green!
Oh my desires! Talking 'bout, talking 'bout...
Whoa that...money, whoa!
People do wonderful things!
Some people, give me a nickle, brother can you smell now?
Money can drive some people Out of their minds!
(For the love of money)
Got to have it, I really need it!
(For the love of money)
How many times have I heard you say,
(For the love of money)
Don't have, don't have, don't let money rule you!
(For the love of money)
How many times have I heard you say,
(For the love of money)
Don't let it, don't let it, don't let money fool you!
People dont let money,
Don't let money take you!
Oh my desire! Keep on tellin you
People want their money,
But don't let money take you!
Oh My desire!

I guess money doesn't by your way in the hearts of Canadians. The Tories may have $10 in the bank, but they still can't break the 30% mark for more than a couple of minutes.
ReplyDeleteThat also means that the Liberals raised the same amount as the NDP. Is that really true? Does it include ridings?
ReplyDeleteThe smart money is on the Conservative Party of Canada; that's why the Liberals floated the trial balloon today about not calling an election after Gomery.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the Liberals don't cheat *too* badly this time - like they did the last two times - I like Stephen Harper's chances, and it appears I'm not the only one.
Jason: If i'm not mistaken, this is the total raised (constits included) - someone correct me if i'm wrong.
ReplyDeleteAnalogue: My smart money would be on a Conservative Party led by someone like Bernard Lord or Potato Pete. Harper is a dud of a leader and Canadians can see it.
To all: I think these numbers may show the unhealthy dependence that the Feds had on Corporate donations, whereas the CPC depends more on individual donations. I'm interested to see if Magna continues to donate to the Tories after Ms. Stronach's crossing. Interesting...
This also lends some credence to the Grits contention (you'll be hearing it non-stop from September until the next election) that they really are "cleaning up the system".
ReplyDeleteIt's probably not 100% true, of course, but there is something to be said for a party that brings in finace reform laws that seem to have screwed themselves more than any of their opponents. But don't worry about the Libs... they spend months and months taking credit for that.
The NDP total is a bit inflated because it includes their provincial parties as well. But still...this isn't very encouraging for the Liberals, even though they'll get more than the other parties through the 1.75$/vote scheme.
ReplyDeleteBut it's not overly surprising. 2004 was not a very exciting year to be a Liberal whereas the new Conservative Party was born and rising in the polls. I also tend to think the Liberals put people on the National Executive who would be puppets to the Centre, rather than the most qualified people who could raise money.
The new finance rules weren't about cleaning up the system - they were about Chretien taking the opportunity to screw over Martin by cutting off the corporate donations. :)
ReplyDeleteCalgarygrit,
ReplyDeleteYes it includes the provincial parties, but that's because of the way the NDP is organized. I joined the Ontario NDP and get the Federal membership for free!
So inorder to be in the feds, you are automatically part of the provincial wing.
I'm not sure that I like the idea of the Federal Provincial connection. I don't think I would join a party that was basically merged with its federal or provincial counterpart. I think I should be able to reserve the right to not support one or the other. I don't like the idea of being handcuffed.
ReplyDeleteFor example, I know a number of people who support the federal ND's but support the Alberta Liberals provincially.
Though with a fourth party like the ND's, it might make more sense to be connected for simple organizational and financial purposes. Strength in numbers....
I took a look at the CBC story and this only includes donations to the national party. I know that the Liberal Party has been focusing on donations to ridings, so that could be part of an explanation.
ReplyDeleteah. Thanks Jason. But shouldn't that be counted as well? Will those numbers be in a seperate EC report?
