greens at 9%.
A new Angus-Reid poll is out and is showing the Federal Conservatives 3% ahead of the Federal Liberals. It also shows Elizabeth May's Green Party of Canada on a bit of an upswing at the expense of the Federal NDP. Here are the results compared with results from November and May, 2006:

Greens are at about 1/3 of the Liberal support. Greens are still a fringe party, right? ;-)
ReplyDeleteDo you think that the Greens could take a seat in the next election?
ReplyDeleteRob, I think the Greens are bound to get a seat, but them getting more is the question. I'm fairly sure May has a plan to get a few seats, and if our antiquated election system keeps them out of the House, it may be the push needed to get PR voting in place (in some form).
ReplyDeleteI don't think the one-trick pony Greens will get a seat, with the possible exception of May. They simply do not have the money and on-the-ground sophisication of the major parties.

ReplyDeleteThats a coincidence, they used to say the same thing about the Reform party.
Anonymous, if that *is* your real name, I'd find your opinion more interesting if I hadn't heard it a million times from people who don't think.
ReplyDeleteCalling the Greens "one trick" is like calling the Liberals the party of corruption. It's satisfying, yet not really accurate when it comes to describing the bulk of their policies.
And as Gimbol said, the Reform party went from nothing to government in less than 20 years.
The Greens are POLLING at almost 1/3 support of the Liberals. They always poll well since they make a convenient protest/none of the above option on telephone surveys.
ReplyDeleteTime will tell if they actually translate it into votes and seats.
Noise.
ReplyDeleteCalgarygrit, if people wanted to protest politics, they would say "none of the above" or "other", instead of Green. People don't just willy nilly throw their vote behind a party because it sounds like they might address issues important to them, do they?
ReplyDeleteThe Green's will continue to do better as more experienced people run for them. In the 2004 election I know several people who ran Green and let's just say I wouldn't trust them to baby-sit my kid let alone run my country. In the 2006 election there was already some progress as I saw some more quality in their candidates. They are still a few years off but hopefully this trend continues.
ReplyDeleteCanada's New Government is only polling at 35%?!?!?! Even after they cut the GST by 1%? My lord...
ReplyDeleteIf the Harper minority makes it through another year, they will try to bring the GST down to 5% in the 2008 budget. Which would make defeating them over that budget a suicide move for the other parties...
ReplyDeleteHarper's smart like that, yo. Too bad he doesn't understand the difference between CO2 and smog.
