Yes, these ads. By now I'm sure most of you have heard about the Federal Conservatives attack ad's aimed at Federal Liberal leader Stephane Dion which are to be broadcast during next weeks SuperBowl.
To be clear, I'm not a fan of political attack ads, but that doesn't mean I won't give the Harper Tories credit for starting their anti-Dion campaign early. None of the major parties own the highground when it comes to negative attack ads, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that the Tories are running a pre-election Blitzkrieg on Dion's leadership abilities.
The Paul Martin's Federal Liberals ran negative ads in the past two elections and it looks like the Tories are trying to do the same thing to Dion that the Chretien Liberals did to Stockwell Day in 2000 (Anyone remember the Reform Alliance and their hidden agenda?).
Whether the ads will be effective or is anot nother issue. They're not the fanciest or even the damning attack ads I've seen, so It should be interesting to see the reaction that Canadian football fans give when they see the ads next weekend.

If you want to see something that will make you sit up an take notice watching the income trust committee later on when it is repeated and watch McCallum attack Flaherty..It makes this ole great granny feel good when Rooster McCallum goes on the attack especially to one who doesnot know what he is talking about....remember Ontario....greatgranny
ReplyDeleteI found it mildly amusing watching the various news channels replaying the attack ads over and over again when they were being discussed, which did wonders for their airtime and exposure.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching hours of American attack ads, all I can say is: yawn.
ReplyDeleteNEWSFLASH! STOP THE PRESSES! THE CONSERVATIVES DON'T THINK THE LIBERAL LEADER IS A GOOD LEADER!?!?!
ReplyDeleteBORING. PREDICTABLE. MOVE ALONG.
When the election time polls come out ranking who voters think would make the best PM Stephane Dion will trail Stephen Harper by 20 - 30 points even if the parties are much closer.
ReplyDeleteI've seen better attack ads. I would give the content of two of the ads about a 6-7 for effectiveness, and the other one about a 4-5.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I would give them a 9 out of 10 for the effectivness of getting them played on every newscast for free.
from CTV:
ReplyDelete"The television ads, which began airing Monday, use footage from last fall's Liberal leadership debates to deliver the message that the new Grit leader is weak, indecisive and an environmental failure. But that footage belongs to a consortium of TV networks which pooled their resources to provide live coverage of the debate"
Attack ads before the writ is dropped? It's unorthodox and could really backfire. Canadians don't appear to take attack ads in stride the way Americans do.
