As someone who's working in the oil industry, I am fully aware of our pollution record (and the lengths the industry is going to fix that).
ReplyDeleteKyoto is a political hand grenade being tossed between the Chretian and Martin camps in the Liberal Party. The Greens actually have a plan that will meet and exceed the requirements of Kyoto.
So, instead of making off-the-cuff comments, take some time and educate yourself on such topics as the Green Party Environmental plan and the various scientific outputs of western universities (for example, the U of A is a world leader in organ transplanting).

So where's this smog in Alberta? And Kyoto is another money laundering scheme for corporations that will do little to help anything. Global warming is a myth subscibed to by metrosexual Toronto suburbanites so they can blame other regions of the country for the smog they suck back every day.

ReplyDeleteI think you need to study some science friend. Smog in Toronto is a byproduct of indutrialized activity west of Toronto, primarily areas like Chicago and Michigan that is carried to Toronto by prevailing winds. The GTA would also contribute to smog that appears in cities to the East.
Global warming is supported by a majority of scientists. There is a minority of industry-funded 'experts' who suggest their science is false. But since CO2 is a greenhouse gas and we have been producing a lot of it, it would make sense that global warming is occuring as evidenced by receding glaciers.
It is the same logic behind CFCs creating holes in the ozone layer.
In sum, global warming is not a scam, but a legitimate phenomenon.

Glaciers and the Ice Age could have just as easily been caused by a nuclear winter due to volcanic eruptions, which seem to be starting up again.
If the planet were going into an age of Global Cooling, would that somehow be better? Suddenly, cropland in the Prairies would be covered by a glacier and only the hardiest of alpine plants wwould grow in Calgary? How is this outcome better?
Kyotoites drone on and on about the drivers (stimuli) of global warming. C02 comes from industry, cars, cattle - everything it seems. But nature is a self-regulating envirinment. Other response models of analyzing the issue would be more relevant, such as studies of crop yields and tree rings.
Trees sequester carbon, and more C02 in the air gives them more resources for growth. Nobody seems to be studying whether or not trees and biomass is growing at an accellerated rate.
And no, a carbon-trading credit scheme is not the answer. If you recall, erickson's Premier Dolton McGuinty actually proposed firing up some nuclear plants in Ontario to - guess what? - meet their Kyoto targets. Same with Portugal. The real reason why India and China are exempt isn't because it's in order to allow them to play catch up in terms of industry - it's to stop them from expanding their nuclear capacity. If they were signatory to the Kyoto Accord, they would cite their zero-emmissions CANDU reactors as a means to achieve this target.
India is not signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty, so they can use their plutonium for nuclear weapons programs, which would accellerate the mini Cold War between India and Pakistan.

ReplyDeleteDave: No sir. It's fee open source material. You can filter spam comments and get the IP of anyone commenting on your blog. You just have to pay the cost of hosting which isn't that prohibitive. I pay 40 dollar a year for 7 domains through 1&1 hosting. It takes a bit of ftp know-how and stuff to upload via ftp and hack your template to what you want it to be. After fiddling around with blogger templates for a while, I was able to get it, but not without the help of my brother who knows that shiat like the back of his hand.
