I've read excerpts of Whats the matter with Kansas. It seemed pretty interesting. I forgot about it till you mentioned it. It'll be hard to crack that state. I should know, I lived in Kansas City for 8 months. However things do change over time. Alberta one day might vote Liberal (SHUDDER). I think that the Dems might have a shot at Congress or the White House this year or 2008 if they unite with a simple plan like Gringrich's Contract with America. B/c the Republicans are what the federal Liberals are, arrogant and disorganized and corrupt. Harper did this same strategy. 5 key priorities instead of like 50 for Paul Martin and they all were hard to understand. I hope the Dems put up someone who isn't a pussy or boring like Jonh Kerry. I'm all for Wesley Clark if he runs god-willing. We're gonna be in war for awhile now I think and we need a 4 star General as commander in chief. Please let me know how that book on Alberta politcs uncovered is. I might buy it if its that good.
ReplyDeleteWhat's The Matter With Kansas is excellent--but then again, I only got through the first three chapters on a flight to New York City before I had to put it down. It got a little depressing and bleak. I'll pick it up again soon when I have some time--one could do a paper comparing the author's thesis to Alberta politics (something I'm considering if I get the opportunity).
ReplyDeleteI think Wes Clark is awesome, too, Emil, but the party seems to be coalescing around some kind of H. Clinton/M. Warner/R. Feingold battle. I just hope to God that it's not Hillary.
ReplyDeleteI recently finished reading "Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut which was an excellent read. While not as political/philosophical as most of my reads, it was nonetheless a very interesting and engaging novel about small town USA and the struggle with racism, sexism and self-identity. Heavily recommended.
ReplyDeleteWar by Gwyn Dyer is a great book. For a Navy boy he did a great job of telling the story of us grunts.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Bush's Brain. Its definitely recommended for those who think Bush is doing all this stuff on his own. Its all politcally calculated from Iraq to putting tariffs on imported steel which probabaly helped Bush secure Ohio and West Virginia. Without this measure, Kerry may have won Ohio. I recommend reading Stephen Harper by William Johnson. Its a great book and I hope to read the sequel about Harper as PM. Of course I'm a big Harper fan although this last week I'm disappointed with his cabinet picks of Michael Fourtier and David Emerson.
ReplyDeleteTo Jim, I really think Hillary is the candidate we don't want to nominate. We need a governor, it just seems they always win. I put my money on Mark Warner or another southern governor, although Mark ain't charismatic. I saw him on c-span and he's kinda boring. I'm still for Wesley Clark. His website has some great speeches.
